Why this matters in Wellington

Wellington's wet climate and prevailing southerlies mean moss starts growing in concrete pores and paver joints within months of new construction. Add in oil drips, tyre marks and the slow build-up of dust and organic litter, and most driveways look noticeably aged by the time they're 18 months old. The right cleaning method matched to the surface, high pressure for plain concrete, lower pressure for coloured-press, makes the difference between a one-off result and a driveway that holds up for 18+ months.

Driveway cleaning is one of James’s most common jobs, partly because Wellington’s wet climate grows moss faster than most NZ cities, partly because driveways are the most visible exterior surface on most properties. A clean driveway is the difference between “my house looks tidy” and “my house looks neglected”, even when the house itself is fine.

James matches the method to the surface. Plain concrete and exposed aggregate get the rotary surface cleaner at high pressure. Coloured-press concrete needs lower pressure and a colour-safe detergent. Pavers get pre-treated for joint moss before blasting. Brick driveways get a gentler treatment to avoid lifting the mortar.

Most single-house driveways run $180–450 to clean. Longer shared driveways, big hardstand areas and properties with heavy moss or oil run higher, James will quote off photos or come on site.

FAQ

Driveway & Path Cleaning, common questions

  • What's the difference between concrete and paver cleaning?

Same method, different chemistry. Concrete and aggregate go straight to high pressure. Pavers James uses a slightly lower pressure on to avoid lifting the joint sand, and pre-treats the moss in the joints with chemistry so it lifts off cleanly.

  • Will it damage coloured concrete?

Not if James uses the right approach. Coloured-press concrete needs a controlled pressure and a colour-safe detergent, too much pressure exposes the aggregate underneath and ruins the colour. He adjusts the technique on the day.

  • How often should I clean my driveway?

Most Wellington driveways look good for 12–18 months after a proper clean. Shaded driveways and south-facing properties closer to 12; sun-exposed driveways closer to 18+.

  • Can you remove old oil stains?

Fresh and moderate oil stains lift cleanly with pre-treatment plus blasting. Deep, long-soaked oil stains usually leave a shadow even after a thorough clean, James will flag it on the day so you know what to expect.

  • What about moss growing in the joints?

Pre-treat with moss chemistry, dwell, blast, rinse. Comes out cleanly. James can put a follow-up residual treatment on to slow regrowth.

  • How long does a driveway clean take?

A standard single-house driveway is 1.5–3 hours. Long shared driveways, big hardstand areas or driveways with heavy moss or oil run 3–5 hours.
