Why this matters in Wellington

Wellington has some of the worst tree-litter and gutter-overflow problems in New Zealand, partly the wet southerlies, partly the established gardens that line most older suburbs. Properties in the leafy suburbs (Karori, Khandallah, Wadestown, Silverstream, Waikanae) need twice-yearly clearing to keep ahead of the seasonal leaf-fall. Coastal properties have a different problem, salt-laden debris that bonds inside the gutter and needs vacuum extraction, not just hand removal.

Gutter cleaning is the most-requested exterior service in Wellington, and the most-neglected. Most homeowners only think about gutters when water’s already overflowing during a southerly storm, by which point the fascia is staining and the downpipes are backing up. The standard schedule is twice a year for properties with overhanging trees, once a year for the rest.

James’s gutter-cleaning method is hand-clear plus vacuum. Hand-clear takes out the bulk leaf litter; the wet/dry vacuum lifts the sludge sitting at the base of the gutter that a hand-clear alone leaves behind. Downpipes get flushed at the end to confirm they’re running freely.

James quotes by linear metre, typical 3-bedroom single-storey homes run $180–500 depending on access and roof shape. Two-storey or trickier roof shapes are quoted after a look. Most customers bundle gutters with a house wash or roof clean for a package discount.

FAQ

Gutter Cleaning, common questions

  • How often should I clean my gutters in Wellington?

Twice a year for properties with overhanging trees, usually late autumn (after leaf-fall) and late spring (before summer). Once a year is enough for properties without nearby trees. Wellington's wet winters mean clogged gutters fail visibly faster here than in the drier parts of NZ.

  • What happens if I don't clean my gutters?

Three things, in order. First, water overflows in heavy rain, staining cladding, washing paint off, spilling onto paths. Second, water pools against the fascia, rotting timber over 2–3 years. Third, downpipes block up, and that can back up into the roof cavity if it gets bad. Regular cleaning sorts all three for $180–500.

  • Do you walk on the roof to clean gutters?

Depends on the roof. Pitched concrete tile and Coloursteel James walks where it's safe. Steep, fragile, or two-storey roofs he works from ladders or extending poles. He won't walk anything that could break, and he'll tell you on the day if access affects the price.

  • Can you clear blocked downpipes?

Yes, a downpipe flush is included in every gutter clean. If a downpipe is severely blocked underground (often a separate issue from the gutter itself), James will flag it, that's a job for a drain specialist.

  • Do you do commercial guttering?

Yes. Body-corp townhouse complexes, school buildings, commercial frontages and warehouse guttering are all regular jobs. Quoted by linear metre for the bigger ones.

  • Can you do gutters as a stand-alone job?

Yes. Most customers bundle gutters with a house wash or roof clean for a package discount, but stand-alone gutter jobs are fine if you've already got the other work covered.
