Why this matters in Wellington

Wellington's wet climate and prevailing southerlies grey timber up fast, most decks and fences look noticeably aged within 12 months of a new install. The right cleaning approach lifts the grey, kills the mould and gets the timber ready for re-staining or oiling, all without raising the grain or damaging the wood. Most fence-and-deck bookings pair up with a house wash for package pricing.

Timber decks and fences grey up fast in Wellington’s wet climate, and a grey deck or fence undersells an otherwise well-kept property. Regular cleaning (every 12–18 months) brings the timber back to its natural colour, kills the surface mould, and either gets the surface ready for re-staining or oiling, or just leaves it looking fresh.

The trick is the right chemistry at the right pressure. Wood-safe biodegradable detergent at low pressure lifts grey and grime without raising the grain. High pressure (the wrong tool for the job) raises the grain, ruins the finish, and can shorten the life of the timber.

Most fence-and-deck bookings pair up with a house wash for package pricing. Quoted per linear metre for fences and per square metre for decks.

FAQ

Fence & Deck Cleaning, common questions

  • Will cleaning damage my deck before I re-stain it?

No, if it's done right. James uses a wood-safe detergent at low pressure that lifts grey and grime without raising the timber grain. The result is a clean, evenly-dried surface that takes stain or oil evenly. Wrong technique (high pressure, wrong angle) can raise grain and ruin the finish.

  • Can you clean and re-stain in one job?

James cleans and preps. He doesn't do the staining or oiling itself, that's a separate trade with its own products and timing. He coordinates with painters and stainers and times his work so the timber is dry and ready when they arrive.

  • What if my fence is rotten in places?

James will flag any rot or movement on the day, cleaning won't fix it, and aggressive cleaning of rotten timber makes it worse. You'll know what he found and what he didn't touch.

  • Will the chemistry kill my plants growing on the fence?

Biodegradable detergents at the concentrations James uses are safe for established plants. He rinses plants down before and after, and avoids spraying straight into beds or on fragile climbers.

  • Can you do a pergola or large decking complex?

Yes. Pergolas and big multi-level decks are quoted per square metre with consideration for access and how tricky it is (high pergolas, multi-storey decks, integrated planters).

  • Do I need to do anything before you arrive?

Move outdoor furniture clear of the work area, get pets inside, and rinse down any dry pot plants if you've got time. James handles the rest.
